Dr. Holben talked about The Ohio Board of Dietetics. The dietitian Karen Dion did not make it to talk to us so that was a little bit of a bummer. It was interesting learning about the job opportunities that they offer in the field of dietetics. I do not really think I would ever want to be an investigator, but it does seem like a very interesting job.

Today Francie from Well Works came and talked to us. Mainly about what she does at Well Works and the programs that they offer. It seems like she does a lot there and comes in contact with a lot of people that are very excited about nutrition or at least interested in learning. I know it makes a huge difference when the clients want to be there and are not forced to be there. I really liked that she seemed to have fun and really enjoys her job.

Today, we talked about our Food Agency programs. It was very interesting to hear about all the different programs in our country. I had no idea there were that many. I really liked the one I got which was Feeding America. It is the nation's largest food bank organization. They do so many great things. It was interesting to hear what programs work very well and ones that are slowing in their popularity. Some of the new programs are causing the older ones to be insignificant. Like the children's school milk program. There are lunch and snack programs that take care of the same things it did.
Hopefully soon we will be able to plant more vegetables in our garden, but I'm not sure. I am not sure about how long everything takes to grow, but I feel like I might not get to see the finished product which is a little sad. That's okay though I learned a lot so far and will learn more. I will just have to have my own garden!

Nick Clausen came in and talked to us about Food Assistance Programs in Athens County. It was very interesting to learn about the system and how it works. I appreciated his view and input whether I agree with 100% of it or not. It sounds like the government programs help a lot of people get enough food for the whole month. I cannot imagine having to live like that, and it makes me appreciate how lucky I really am.
Olivia and I went and looked at our garden plot. All we had to do was water the spinach, because it was already weeded and we don't have anything else planted. It stinks that the weather keeps fluctuating so much. I did not check our plants today and it is 47 degrees right now so I hope they are okay.

In class today Dr. Holben talked about law making. We actually watched a School House Rock video about how a bill becomes a law. It was very cute. We got together in our groups to plan and talk about the plants were are for sure going to pick. We have to look up oxalate content and see if they will interfere with anything with our population. Other than that we are just going to fill out our work book and de-weed so the garden will be ready for our plants.

Today, Dr. Holben passed around a bunch of articles having to do with food security, nutrition, and health. It's funny the most interesting one was the one on how our tax money is spent. It was very cool to see. The other thing he mentioned that stuck to me was about Jewish hospitals and how they have two different dish rooms and so forth. The book he passed around explaining was helpful. It makes sense that so many hospitals probably use disposable products around the times of Jewish holidays.

Today, we all went to community garden. Megan the GA from WellWorks showed us around. We saw where all the equipment is like the shovels, water, compost, and etc. We all picked our area and are trying to decide what group we should do. We would like to do girls our age or teenagers with amenorrhea. Another group thought about that one I think, so we will see if that's what we end up doing or not. I am really excited to garden there. I have planted and taken care of flowers, but never any vegetables. I definitely want to have some sort of garden when I have a house so this will be good practice. I think I will go out there soon to weed again, and maybe plant some starters. Hopefully, I don't kill the vegetables! haha

I am really excited to do the garden. Gardening is a great skill to have to help in eating healthy and being sustainable. I really hope to have a garden myself one day so I am excited to learn a lot about it this quarter. I was trying to think of different groups we could do that would be slightly original. I was thinking kids, but maybe even more specific teenagers. I guess I like the idea of working with kids or teenagers because gardening teaches them how to be responsible and learn how to eat healthy. I guess I'm just not sure what type of kids. Type I Diabetes in children in not very original, but I like that one. I can't think of many diseases we could pick from other than allergies. Another random idea I had was for adults with depression. I don't really know. I will have to talk to my group, but I am excited!
